A brushless DC motor can be built for a wide range of electrical systems, which is one reason brushless technology appears in equipment with very different power architectures. Common configurations include 12V, 24V, 36V, 48V, 72V, and 96V systems. The appropriate voltage depends on the available power source, required output, controller, current limitations, and overall electrical design rather than on the motor alone.

Voltage and current are closely connected. For a given amount of power, a higher operating voltage generally allows the system to deliver that power with lower current. This can influence cable sizing, connectors, switching components, and electrical losses. At the same time, a higher-voltage brushless system requires components that are designed and rated for the corresponding electrical conditions.

A lower-voltage configuration can make sense when a machine already operates from a low-voltage battery or power supply. Compact equipment, portable systems, and other applications may be built around 12V or 24V architecture, while larger systems can use 48V or higher voltage levels. The important point is that the motor voltage should match the system rather than being selected independently.

The motor winding and controller must also be compatible with the chosen voltage. Changing the voltage is not simply a matter of connecting a different power supply to the same motor. Winding characteristics, current requirements, controller capability, and thermal behavior all have to be considered. A suitable brushless motor should operate within the electrical conditions for which it was designed.

For this reason, voltage selection is best viewed as a system-level decision. Once the power source, current requirements, motor output, controller, and duty cycle are understood, it becomes much easier to determine which brushless DC motor configuration is appropriate for the equipment.
