For women, testosterone therapy has a much narrower evidence-based use case, and treatment should remain within the female physiologic range rather than approach male-style replacement targets (Mulhall et al., Journal of Urology, 2018; Davis et al., Journal of Sexual Medicine, 2019). There’s a bit of older short-term research suggesting testosterone therapy can increase female libido in women with low levels of this hormone. Some women seek treatment for lower testosterone levels caused by another health condition or surgery, such as removal of the ovaries. Classical male hypogonadism is when low testosterone levels are due to an underlying medical condition or damage to your testicles, pituitary gland or hypothalamus. It’s important to note that the normal ranges for testosterone levels can vary based on the type of blood test done and the laboratory where it is done.
If your testosterone test results show that your testosterone level is low, this may be a result of aging. However, according to the American Urology Association, men with levels below 300 ng/dL should be classified as having low T, or hypogonadism. You may also want to take a testosterone test if you’re experiencing symptoms of low or high testosterone.
High or low T levels in women may indicate an underlying medical condition, such as hirsutism, PCOS, tumors, or CAH. To prepare for a testosterone test, a healthcare provider may recommend fasting for several hours before getting the blood sample. A healthcare provider can provide additional support on medical and natural treatments based on a person’s unique health problems. Typically, HRT supplements estrogen and progesterone (female hormones), but certain therapies can also deliver testosterone. Hormone replacement therapy provides women with hormones that are typically lost or reduced during menopause. Despite the lack of targeted therapies for women with low testosterone, they have one option that may increase their levels. There are currently no Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved testosterone medical treatments for women.
It’s natural to be concerned about lower testosterone levels. However, laboratories may report levels down to 264 ng/dL as within the normal range. Some research also suggests that high levels of prenatal testosterone levels may be linked to autism in children. A 2018 study in 60 children found that testosterone levels in the womb may also affect how your right and left brain function. Changes in mood, energy levels, or cognition might signal low testosterone levels.
When you have an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia, your body may lose the nutrients it needs to maintain sufficient estrogen. After you start your period, the main type of estrogen in your body (except during pregnancy) is estradiol. During puberty, estrogen shoots up to help your body make physical changes, such as breast development. Estrogen levels rise and fall throughout your life. But there are ranges over a lifetime by which testosterone levels are measured and compared at any age. At this time there are no age-specific testosterone reference ranges for males or females. In some cases, low testosterone in females may also be caused by low estrogen or menopause, as there’s some overlap in the symptoms. For example, after age 30 years, a male’s testosterone levels, on average, decrease by 1% per year but can be as much as 2% per year. For males under age 45 years, a testosterone test is usually performed in the morning when T levels are highest. Read on to learn more about testosterone, typical levels for males and females, and what a high or low testosterone test result may mean.
Normal levels of testosterone may be achievable with hormone therapy and lifestyle adjustments. If a woman has symptoms of high or low testosterone, it’s recommended that she visit a healthcare provider to get further testing and a diagnosis. Medical, natural, or a combination of both types of treatment may help regulate testosterone levels. Many women with high testosterone levels will have irregular menses or no period at all. It’s important to note that for people assigned female at birth (AFAB), there’s no exact number for determining high testosterone levels, also known as hyperandrogenism.
